This is all great information. Thank you so much! Right now I'm working the non-union freelance circuit as an assistant, with some editing jobs here and there. Hopefully all of this will come together and make more sense soon. I do know a lot more about the process now that I've read this article. I appreciate you taking the time out to write this. Take care!

Hi Robert! Helpful blog, thank you for all of the information. I am a music editor looking to join the union and the jobs for us in non-union are 0. My young colleagues and I are finding it impossible to join the Union. Half of them have parents that work as famous feature film music editors and cannot get in either. There was something in your blog that sparked my interest; you say that union members can work non-union jobs - if that is the case, would a union editor working on a non-union show be able to hire say me and for me to declare those hours? This process has been such a catch 22 for all of us music editors, any additional information will be useful.

Also, how does the whole joining process go, when you've gathered all of your paper work and bring them to your interview? What do they ask, verify, etc..etc...

Again thank you for all of your help!

Hi T Jones,
Thank you for your comment and advise. In fact I am looking for a job in LA. I agree that I have to be closer to the action but truth is that if I don't find a job I can't afford moving to LA. But I'm working on it!! Thank you again.

The roster will not help you. No one that I know of hires from the roster. You need to get out of Orange county and get close to the action. Relationships are the only way to get work.
Good luck.
